A Family Legacy of Local Craft

Fabricators Unlimited has been shaping countertops and surfaces for four decades, though many homeowners are only just beginning to recognize the name. Founded in 1985 in Fargo, North Dakota, the family-owned company has grown into a regional presence serving Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Idaho.

The Billings location opened in 2001, when Nick Thompson, the North Dakota owner’s son, was sent west to test the market. More than 25 years later, Fabricators Unlimited remains firmly rooted in Billings.

Today, the company is still family-owned and operated, with multiple generations involved. That continuity shapes how the team approaches every project, from residential kitchens to large commercial spaces.

WHAT FABRICATORS DOES

Fabricators Unlimited specializes in the fabrication and installation of countertops and surface materials for both residential and commercial projects. Kitchens account for a large share of their work, but projects also include bathrooms, laundry rooms, showers, bathtub surrounds, fireplace surrounds, wall cladding, and indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Every stage of the process is handled in-house. From initial consultation and material selection to templating, fabrication, and installation, the work is completed by company employees rather than subcontractors. That consistency allows for clear communication, reliable craftsmanship, and a smoother overall experience.

If questions arise after installation, customers are not calling a national hotline. They are calling a local team that knows the project and stands behind the work.

In addition to fabrication and installation, the company operates a sister business, Fabricators Supply. The showroom expands the experience beyond countertops, offering sinks, faucets, cabinet hardware, and functional accessories. Homeowners can coordinate multiple elements of a kitchen or bath in one place, whether planning a full remodel or simply refreshing a space with updated fixtures, a new countertop, or a backsplash.

Having both businesses under one umbrella allows Fabricators to meet clients at any stage, from ground-up construction to thoughtful updates over time.

THE VALUE OF BUYING LOCAL

For many homeowners, working locally comes down to trust and long-term access. Fabricators Unlimited has built its reputation on being available well beyond installation day.

“When something chips or a customer has a question about cleaning or maintenance, we are right here,” the team explains.

Billings homeowner Maggie Winters has experienced that accessibility firsthand. She first worked with Fabricators Unlimited during her 2014 home build and has since partnered with them on several renovation projects, including a custom office space.

“I didn’t even shop around,” Winters says. “We knew Nick was our guy.”

During her home build, Winters envisioned a thick butcher block island. With three young children at home, the team gently advised against the maintenance demands of natural wood. Instead, they collaborated on a custom wood-grain laminate island with aligned edges and increased thickness to create visual weight. The result delivered the warmth she wanted with the durability her family needed at that stage of life.

More recently, Winters installed a T-shaped quartz desktop in her home office as part of a DIY built-in project.

“The installers were absolute perfectionists,” she says. “They would not leave until the seams were as smooth and clean as possible. They kept adjusting it until it was exactly right.”

What stands out most to Winters is the collaborative spirit. “They are creative, they are patient, and they explain everything. From the office staff to the installers, they are professional and kind. Those are the kinds of people you want in your home.”

EDUCATION OVER TRENDS

Many homeowners arrive with inspirational photos but a limited understanding of how materials perform over time. One of the most consistent themes in the showroom is education.

Quartz remains a popular choice for its durability and low maintenance, making it well-suited for busy households. Natural stone, including granite and quartzite, continues to appeal to homeowners who value unique movement and character, without requiring periodic sealing and careful maintenance. Solid surface materials are also seeing renewed appreciation as more homeowners learn about their performance and versatility. These materials resist stains, tolerate frequent cleaning, and offer a seamless appearance. Unlike quartz or natural stone, solid-surface countertops can be repaired when scratched or damaged, making them a practical, long-term option for kitchens and bathrooms.

The team regularly discusses everyday habits, from placing hot pans directly on surfaces to using harsh cleaners that can dull finishes. Small decisions, they explain, can significantly affect how a countertop looks and performs over time.

“We focus on helping people make informed decisions,” the team says. “If something is not a good fit for a space or lifestyle, we are upfront about that.”

DESIGN, COMMUNITY & LOOKING AHEAD

Design preferences have shifted in recent years. White kitchens are giving way to warmer cabinetry, and countertops are following suit. Many homeowners are gravitating toward surfaces with subtle movement and depth rather than bold veining.

While you can see Fabricators Unlimited on display in many residential homes, they have also completed work in many commercial spaces around town. City Hall, the Billings Logan International Airport, hospitals, and doctors' offices, just to name a few. Whether the setting is public or personal, the goal remains consistent craftsmanship designed to last.

The company is currently expanding its Billings showroom by approximately 7,000 square feet, creating a space that reflects how people actually live. Rather than focusing solely on high-end installations, the updated showroom will feature practical, approachable displays that encourage questions and conversation.

After more than 40 years in business, Fabricators Unlimited and Fabricators Supply continue to grow without losing sight of what built them in the first place. By keeping fabrication in-house, prioritizing education, and investing in long-term relationships, the company has earned the loyalty of clients like Maggie Winters.

“They work with you on ideas and on budget. And they care about getting it right,” Winters says.

In an industry where details matter and trust is earned, Fabricators Unlimited continues to build its reputation one project at a time.
