A Home Built Around the View

When Ali Mitchell began building her first home at The Timbers on Alkali Creek, she knew the windows would shape how the space felt every day. Surrounded by Montana’s landscape, she wanted a home that felt open, bright, and closely connected to the outdoors.

“I really wanted it to feel like the outside was inside,” Ali says. “That was the goal from the beginning.”

To help bring that vision to life, she partnered with 406 Windows Co.

A MONTANA BUSINESS BUILT ON EXPERIENCE

Founded in 1995, 406 Windows Co. has spent decades working with homeowners and builders across the region. Originally operating as Montana Window & Door, the company later rebranded to reflect both its Montana roots and a more modern direction. Today, 406 Windows Co. is known for its deep product knowledge, long-standing industry relationships, and hands-on approach to customer service.

That reputation is what first caught Ali’s attention as she began researching window suppliers for her home.

“They weren’t just handing me a quote,” she says. “They were walking through options with me and helping me understand what would actually work.”

A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO CUSTOM HOMES

For Ali, who was navigating her first custom build, the guidance from 406 Windows Co. proved essential. From window sizing to manufacturer coordination, the team helped manage details that can quickly become overwhelming.

“They helped me figure out where I could save money and where it made sense to invest,” she says.

That collaborative mindset is central to how 406 Windows Co. operates. The team works closely with homeowners, builders, and architects to make sure design goals align with performance and budget.

CHOOSING PRODUCTS THAT PERFORM

406 Windows Co. is selective about the manufacturers it represents. Over the years, the company has built relationships with partners that meet its standards for quality, reliability, and long-term support.

“We want to work with companies that stand behind their product,” says Brian Reay, President and Owner, of 406 Windows Co. “We feel our current manufacturer relationships have proven they meet our high expectations.”

That commitment shows up when problems arise. During Ali’s build, one window arrived incorrectly sized. The issue was addressed quickly, with the team expediting the replacement and handling the logistics.

“I never felt like I had to chase them down,” Ali says. “They took care of it.”

WHY LOCAL MATTERS

Being able to rely on a local company made a lasting impression on Ali, especially after a separate experience sourcing doors from out of state. What she hoped would be a cost-saving decision turned into years of frustration due to manufacturing issues and a lack of accountability.

“That money I thought I was saving didn’t matter anymore,” she says. “Having someone local who will stand behind their product is huge.”

For 406 Windows Co., that sense of responsibility is part of doing business in Montana. The team understands the climate, the construction challenges, and the importance of being available long after installation.

BALANCING DESIGN & PERFORMANCE

Aesthetics played a major role in Aly's decisions. She ultimately chose black windows, drawn to their clean contrast and modern feel. While she considered white for its timeless appeal, the darker frames better suited the architecture and setting of her home.

Performance was equally important. With large, south-facing windows and a statement window over the staircase, 406 Windows Co. helped Ali consider orientation, UV exposure, and insulation.

Energy efficiency is an ongoing focus for the company, particularly as homeowners continue to request larger expanses of glass. Triple-glazed windows, thermally broken frames, and European-style tilt-and-turn systems are increasingly popular for maintaining comfort and style in Montana’s climate.

EXPANDING THE WAY HOMES CONNECT OUTDOORS

Another growing request is lift-and-slide doors. These large-scale systems allow wide openings that connect interior living spaces to patios and outdoor areas. The result is a home that feels more open and adaptable throughout the seasons. It is a shift that reflects how people want to live, with flexible spaces that respond to both daily life and entertaining.

A PARTNERSHIP THAT LASTS

As Ali looks ahead to future projects, her approach remains consistent. Large windows, thoughtful placement, and working with a local company she trusts.

“We love them,” she says. “I wouldn’t hesitate to use 406 Windows Co. again and have recommended them over and over.”

That trust is what 406 Windows Co. continues to build its business on. Whether working on homes at The Timbers on Alkali Creek, Ironwood, or projects beyond Montana, the focus remains the same: helping homeowners create spaces that are comfortable, functional, and built to last.
