Flooring Carpet One Tells Us What's Trending This Year

"Flooring is the foundation of the home,” says Randy Mostad, co-owner of Billings Carpet One Floor & Home and enthusiastic Floorologist. According to Randy, when the flooring is right, everything else falls into place.

Flooring is the muted star in the home. It is always there, allowing other elements, such as wall color, furniture, and décor, to shine. Finding the right flooring for your space can be overwhelming, though. With so many options, including material, style, size, and color, where do you start?

While flooring is a significant investment, you’ll be well-cared for as a customer at Carpet One. Their Interior Designer, Sarah Wise, has been with Carpet One for nearly 25 years. Sarah’s calm demeanor and extensive design knowledge make choosing flooring less stressful. She helps the customer realize their vision with a flooring choice that is the perfect fit.

Sarah’s not the only one who excels at their job. Employee retention is huge at Carpet One, so you’re in excellent hands with such a knowledgeable staff as a customer.

Before reviewing the trends, some tried and true principles should be considered when narrowing down your flooring choices:

Consider your lifestyle and who will be treading on your flooring in the coming years. Will your flooring choices withstand kids and pets? Are you a “shoes-off” home, or do you allow shoes? These factors should influence your flooring choice.

• Flooring maintenance is key to protecting your investment. Can the flooring be maintained properly? When choosing flooring, consider the recommended maintenance schedule and associated costs.

Flooring is like a good photographer at your wedding. It does not have a starring role in your wedding, but the photographer's skills will live on long after the day is gone. With flooring, it’s worth the investment to ensure it will live up to what’s put down on it.

FLOORING TRENDS FOR 2025

We spoke with Randy and Sarah to bring you flooring trends that will work for every budget and purpose.

Warm earth tones are resurging. Natural shades such as honey, warm walnut, and natural oak provide a calming, grounding effect and work with modern and traditional design styles.

Bold geometric patterns, such as herringbone, Versailles, and chevron, add interest, depth, and personality to the room and create a wow factor. These designs work with hardwood, engineered flooring, and tile; the sky is the limit.

Large tiles, much larger than in the past, are replacing yesterday's standard 12” x 12” tiles. The standard tiles are getting a size upgrade, ranging from 24” x 48” up to 1 meter x 3 meters each. This creates a seamless look and reduces the number of grout lines, which lends to less maintenance and an overall clean appearance.

The theme of increasing size spills over into planks, too. Whether vinyl or hardwood, the trend is moving toward longer and bigger planks, 8 to 9 feet long and 11 inches wide. This creates long lines in a room, soothing the eyes.

Textured flooring is replacing the smooth, flat surfaces we’ve come to know. Whether it’s brushed stone, lightly ribbed tile, or naturally textured wood - the tactile quality of flooring will be on display this year.

Low-maintenance options such as engineered luxury vinyl planks or tile will continue to dominate flooring choices for homes with high-traffic areas, children, or pets. The LVP and tile options mimic the hardwood look, giving lots of design control for those who don’t want to worry about protecting their flooring.

Carpet is always popular for home areas that call for cozy warmth, such as bedrooms and play areas.

Hardwood options such as oak, maple, and hickory are replacing more exotic choices such as Brazilian Cherry, which were used in the past. The oak, maple, and hickory varieties are native to North America, so they work better in our environment. However, hardwood is “hard work” in terms of maintenance and care. It is more prone to dent, scratch, fade, and stain than LVP. Hardwood also needs a higher air moisture content than our very dry Billings environment can provide. A home-wide humidifier is strongly recommended to prevent costly damage to the flooring.

Another trend that never goes out of style is customer service. Carpet One is on point for this. With its knowledgeable staff, it helps homeowners find the perfect fit. Regardless of what’s in style this year, you’ll find what works best for you at Carpet One. The store's family vibes, cumulative expertise, and vast selection make Carpet One a flooring store that is always on trend.
